Mljet National Park: Pristaniste to Polace
Walk with views - 2km
Most visitors who enter the Mljet National Park through Luka Polace will take advantage of the free travel offered in the price of the entrance fee and catch the bus from Luka Polace to Pristaniste from where they can take the small ferry (also free of charge) to the monastic island of Sv. Marija. On returning and once you have had a chance for a swim, consider taking the foot paths back from Pristaniste to Luka Polace. The route is quite and is on near deserted roads, then foot paths and takes you through the ancient forest of the centre of Mljet, one of the items for which the National Park is designated.
At only 2km it is not a particularly long walk which never rises much above 80m so it is not particularly strenuous but in the heat of the day it is just enough to make you feel like you have achieved something.
As you approach Luka Polace the landscape opens up and the footpath changes from dirt to concreted paving giving fantastic views of the anchorage and across to the mainland at Peljesacs. Here on the left you will pass a number of circular structures (of uncertain purpose) some ancient and some modern. We speculated that these may have been used for charcoal burning - but if you have a better idea let us know.
