Bisevo: The Blue Cave (Modra Spilja)
CIYC Review by ArekW
Natural Wonder, Cave, Anchorage
Blue Cave is located in a small bay called Balun, on the east side of Orok Bisevo and about 4.5 nm south-west of Komiža on Vis and is one of the natural wonders of Croatia. The cave is 35 m long, 17 m wide and 6 m height. During the day the water glows blue in several pools inside where the sun light penetrates by means of an submerged passage.
Visitor enter by 1.6 m height hole by dinghy. Regardless of how you arrive and whether you use your own dinghy a fee of 30 HRK by person is charged.
You have a few ways to reach that cave. First one (which we recommend) is to stay for the night in the Komiža town. You should depart from Komiza about 0900 because the best play of light in the Blue Cave appear from 0930 till 1130.
Another option is to stay in Mezuporat on Bisevo, there are anchorage and few places to mooring (electricity and water is planned but not yet leaid in 2012). You can also stay at anchor near the Cave there are 10-15 m. Attention for NE, E and SE winds.
It is also possible to make the trip on various excursion boats the closest of which depart from Komiža.
If you decide to arrive in the morning you have to reckon with traffic in the bay. There are a lot of yachts proceeding in all directions while theirs crews are exploring the Cave.
Otok Bisevo is located off the western shore of Vis aournd 4.5nm from Komiža. The Blue Cave is in a bay called Belun n the eastern shore of the island.
